Thirty years ago, talking about mental health—let alone suicide—was almost unheard of. It was whispered about, avoided, or met with uncomfortable silence. If you were struggling, you were told to "toughen up, push through it," or "keep it to yourself." Resources were limited, conversations were rare, and stigma was everywhere.
But things have changed. Slowly, steadily, the walls of silence have started cracking. We’ve seen athletes, musicians, and everyday people share their struggles. We’ve built helplines, support networks, and safe spaces. But are we really talking about it enough? Are we asking the right questions? Are we listening?
Today's guest is a well-known figure in the Grande Prairie community. Tom Pura has been a dedicated member of the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce since September 2008, currently serving as the Communications and Public Relations representative. Before his tenure at the Chamber, Tom worked as the Sports Director at Big Country 93.1 CJXX-FM radio from 1988 to 2008.
Beyond his professional commitments, Tom is a passionate advocate for mental health initiatives, dedicating over 12 years to increasing awareness for the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention and the Men at Risk Program, now known as Tough Enough To Talk About It.
I sat down with Tom as he shared the deeply personal story of losing his father to suicide—an experience that profoundly shaped his mission to change the narrative around mental health. Through his journey, he has turned grief into purpose, challenging the stigma and advocating for open, honest conversations about suicide and mental well-being.

The Power of Language: Shaping Mental Health Conversations
Friday Nov 01, 2024
Friday Nov 01, 2024
This podcast is created on the unceded territory of Treaty 8 and Métis District 13, lands that have been occupied, travelled and cared for by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial. As an organization, we recognize the past wrongdoings and systemic inequities faced by our Indigenous populations. We are committed to uplifting Indigenous voices, respecting traditional lands, and working together towards reconciliation and healing.
Imagine a world where every word spoken to and about us affirms our humanity, respects our individuality and acknowledges our unique experiences. Hi, I'm your host, Cara Jones, and this is the Starting Conversations podcast, where we will explore topics around mental health, education, and suicide prevention.
The Starting Conversations podcast is an initiative of the Resource Centre for Suicide Prevention and is located in northern Alberta with offices in Grand Prairie and Grimshaw. It's our vision to promote mental well-being, raise awareness, eliminate stigma, and provide educational resources to reduce suicide, suicide behaviours, and their impacts.
When we use language, it can either empower or stigmatize. Person-centred language shifts the focus from labels and diagnosis to the person's lived experience, promoting a more compassionate and inclusive approach to mental health care. In today's episode, I'm speaking with Tammy Monro, Public Education and Outreach Director at the Resource Center for Suicide Prevention in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
Tammy gives us a little insight into the differences between person-centered and identity-centered language. We discuss the importance of mindful language in mental health, the impact of stigmatizing words, and the evolving terminology around suicide. Join us as we delve into how changing our language can create a more supportive environment for everyone.
